Wheelchair vs. Stretcher Transport: Which Memphis Medical Ride Do You Need?

Wheelchair and stretcher transport are not interchangeable, and choosing the wrong one can be unsafe or cost more than necessary. This guide explains the differences and when each is appropriate in the Memphis area.

Wheelchair Transport

Wheelchair NEMT is built for riders who can remain seated upright. ADA-approved vehicles use a lift or ramp, and trained drivers secure the chair with tie-downs and a lap/shoulder belt. It works for manual chairs, power chairs, and many mobility scooters.

Stretcher Transport

Stretcher NEMT serves people who must remain lying down because of recent surgery, serious weakness, or a condition that makes sitting unsafe. The patient moves on a cot with securement, and many trips include a second crew member.

Key Differences in Equipment and Crew

Wheelchair rides typically use one trained driver and a lift/ramp vehicle. Stretcher rides use a gurney, extra securement, and often a two-person crew for safe movement, which is part of why stretcher pricing is higher.

How to Choose

If the rider can sit up safely for the whole trip, wheelchair transport is usually appropriate and more affordable. If the rider cannot sit upright, must stay flat, or has been ordered to remain non-weight-bearing, choose stretcher transport. For unstable or emergency conditions, call 911 instead.
